Listening with the Heart – World Hearing Day 2025

Today is World Hearing Day. A day dedicated to raising global awareness of the importance of hearing. But for me, and for the people I meet in my consultation room today, it is so much more than that.

Today, I listen to stories of people struggling with tinnitus. People who have often tried everything, been sent from one specialist to another, and sometimes no longer know where to turn. But what touches me time and again is the resilience within us as human beings. The real challenge is finding the right path within that resilience - step by step, both literally and figuratively.

Hearing is more than just the ears

Tinnitus is not a ‘simple’ hearing problem. It affects something much bigger. It influences how you sleep, how you work, how you live. It can be exhausting, anxiety-inducing, and isolating. And yet, I see so many people who continue to move forward. Who hold onto the hope that things can change. Who are open to exploring a new path, even if the silence never returns.

That courage commands respect. As an audiologist, I can offer explanations, guidance, and tools. But real change comes from the people themselves. From their ability to redefine their relationship with sound. From their willingness not only to long for silence but also to discover that peace can be found in other ways.

Listening to what truly needs to be heard

Today, I am not just listening to sounds - I am listening to the stories behind them. The emotions, the questions, the concerns. And I hope that, even if just for a moment, I can be a voice that says: I hear you, I see you, you are not alone in this process.

Today, on World Hearing Day

Today, much will be said about prevention, technology, and healthcare. And that is important. But let’s also have respect for the people who face the challenge of tinnitus or other severe hearing problems every day. Who, despite everything, keep searching for a way to move forward.

So, if you meet someone today who is struggling with hearing problems, take a moment to ask: How are you really doing? And take the time to listen to their answer. Because sometimes, simply being heard is the first step toward relief.
